Travel Back in Time With Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo

Scarlet Heart: Ryeo (DramaFever)

If we can’t have the life of Go Ha-Jin / Hae-soo in Scarlet Heart: Ryeo, we shall make do with visiting the Korean drama’s filming locations. Now we can all travel back in time and have princes fall all over our feet — a girl can always dream, after all beggars can’t be choosers, right?

1. Baekje Cultural Land

We bet you wouldn’t make Baekje Cultural Land part of your Korea itinerary if it wasn’t used as Scarlet Heart: Ryeo‘s main filming site.

Baekje Cultural Land (Chungnam)

Located in Buyeo County, the Korean government pumped in millions of dollars into rebuilding Sabiung Palace and its village to preserve the history and culture of the Baekje Kingdom (18BC – 660AD).

Neungsa Temple (Topic Images Inc.)

Some prominent buildings within Baekje Cultural Land include the five-storey wooden pagoda, Neungsa Temple, one of the most important Buddhist temple of the period that served as a royal temple within the palace vicinity, Living Culture Village featuring model houses of citizens from different ranks/classes and Royal Tomb Park showing the tombs of noblemen.

2. Ondal Tourist Park

Scarlet Heart: Ryeo (dramabeans)

Remember that steamy scene from the first episode where our beloved princes were taking a bath? Sigh, look at ’em toned torsos… Uh, we digressed.

Ondal Tourist Park (Visit Korea)

Ondal Tourist Park, used as the princes’ palace in Scarlet Heart: Ryeo, is a popular filming location for many historical dramas like Faith and The Flower in PrisonOndol Tourist Park was built as a model to showcase the houses of noblemen and traditional shopping district of the past. You can even try on costumes and props used during the actual filming of dramas here!

3. Ondal Grotto Cave

Ondal Cave (Visit Korea)

If you’re done visiting Ondal Tourist Park and is still up for some adventure, head over to the neighbouring Ondal Grotto Cave — a limestone cave that was estimated to have formed over 400 million years ago.

Scarlet Heart: Ryeo – Ondal Cave (dramabeans)

Remember the not-so-secret meeting between Hae-soo and 8th prince, whereby our dear prince asked Hae-soo for her hand in marriage, only to be intervened by Court Lady Oh? That scene was filmed right in Ondal Grotto Cave.

Ondal Grotto Cave, Korea (Wikipedia)

Ondal Grotto Cave measures to about 760 metres — not exactly long compared to Manjanggul Cave in Jeju — but Ondal Grotto Cave‘s stalagmites and stalactites makes the cave that’s worth visiting if you’re on a holiday to Korea.

4. Pocheon Art Valley

Cheonjuho Lake

Remember when the heroine of Scarlet Heart: Ryeo got pulled into a time slip while trying to save a drowning boy at Cheonjuho Lake? The scene was filmed at Pocheon Art Valley — a granite quarry eroded by spring water and rain runoffs.

Pcheon Herb Island

Nearby Pocheon Art Valley lies Pocheon Herb Island, a European-themed attraction that houses more than 340 types of herbs used by bakeries, cafes and restaurants on Pocheon Herb Island. If you fancy a freshly-baked, fluffy baguette or a warm cup of tea made with the freshest herbs, you know where to go.
